Unions Demand Binding Worker Agreements Before AI Hits Workplaces

Australia’s peak union body is calling for new national rules that would force employers to negotiate with their workers before introducing artificial intelligence into the workplace. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) wants enforceable agreements that give employees a direct say in how AI is used on the job—making sure it doesn’t threaten job security, invade privacy, or cut workers out of future gains. The proposal is part of the ACTU’s agenda for next month’s Economic Reform Roundtable.

The ACTU is seeking mandatory AI Implementation Agreements that would require employers to consult staff before rolling out new technology. These agreements would need to include protections around job security, retraining and skills development, transparency about how AI is used, and safeguards over data collection and privacy.

To back the reforms, the ACTU is also calling for the creation of a new National AI Authority and a national Artificial Intelligence Act to ensure Australia’s laws keep up with fast-changing technology across all industries.

ACTU Assistant Secretary Joseph Mitchell said workers won’t embrace AI unless their rights are protected. He said companies without AI agreements in place should not receive government funding, including research incentives or contracts.
